‘Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter’ storyline follows a lonely Japanese woman who discovers a hidden copy of the 1996 film ‘Fargo’ and is convinced a lost treasure she saw in the film is real, and travels to the frozen tundra of Minnesota to find it.
Kumiko is a struggling twenty-something working in a dead-end job. The only joy in her life comes from a grainy VHS tape – an American film in which a man buries a satchel of money in the snowy Midwestern plains. Kumiko is convinced that this treasure is real, and obsesses over its discovery.
With a hand-stitched treasure map and limited preparation,Kumiko escapes her structured life in Toyko and embarks on a quest over the Pacific and through the frozen Minnesota wilderness to uncover a purported fortune.
The story is based around the urban legend surrounding the death of Takako Konishi. It was reported in the media that she had died trying to find the treasure depicted in the 1996 film ‘Fargo.’
The film has been nominated for Best Actress & Best Director 2015 Film Spirit Awards.
The Hollywood Reporter reviews the film as “stunning.”
