In 1984 Prince made his acting debut in the rock musical drama film ‘Purple Rain’ about a young musician (in the film referred to only as The Kid) tormented by a violent home life as his attempts to protect his mother from his raging, abusive father while battling a rival musician Morris Day for the affections of new-in-town beauty Apollonia and a shot at stardom through a secure spot on the bill at legendary Minneapolis club First Avenue.
‘Purple Rain’ showcased Prince during his heyday in the 80s when his music dominated the charts. The film is tied into the album of the same name, which spawned two chart-topping singles: “When Doves Cry” and the opening number “Let’s Go Crazy”, and “Purple Rain” which reached #2.
The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. The musical numbers are electrifying (irrefutably one of the best rock albums of the 1980s) and Prince’s stage presence in the movie is commanding and electrifying.
Prince is indeed a true legend that has endured and stood the test of time. He is a consummate performer that continues to entertain us with his unique brand of funk, rock and soul.
