“There’s an unfinished section they told us not to go down there.” The building is empty but she is not alone. “Imagine living in a place that provides everything you need. A comfortable life, you never have to leave.” Director Eytan Rockaway’s ‘The Abandoned’ originally titled ‘The Confines’ is a claustrophobic thriller sightseeing adventure through the tormented mind of a troubled young woman who takes a job working nights as a security guard at an abandoned luxury apartment building.
An abandoned asylum, A sadistic partner, A tormented soul. Streak (Louisa Krause) is a young strong-willed, pill-popping woman with good intentions whose made a few mistakes. She works with another security guard Cooper (a disgruntled Jason Patric), for a huge extravagant apartment complex. It was built before the recession but has gone unused since as nobody could afford to move in.
“Don’t let anyone in.” Streak’s good nature leads her to let in a homeless man (Mark Margolis) despite protest from Cooper. It’s a decision that she soon regrets as her first night appears to be her last.
“We’re never gonna let you leave.” Steeped in tragedy, ‘The Abandoned’ creates a creepy tone, in an abandoned building. Similar to The Shining, a central character must confront a mystery, which resides just off-screen and within the building’s walls. There are some strange things going on the building and Streak struggles to figure out what’s real and what’s just a figment of her fractured imagination.
‘The Abandoned’ will be released on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital on February 8, 2016.
