One of my favorite songs of the year, ‘Summertime,’ celebrates the official start of summer. “Drums, please!” With the song ‘Summertime’ DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince have one of the summers’ most lasting theme songs. The song was released in May 1991 as the lead single from their fourth studio album, Homebase.
“The whole video was shot in Philly,” said DJ Jazzy Jeff. “We told the director we wanted to have a cookout and invite all our family and friends. There were very few things that were scripted in the video. We knew everyone in the video. They were either one of our friends or one of our family members.”
With instrumental sampling from Kool & the Gang’s “Summer Madness,” ‘Summertime’s‘ lyrics are about things we do during the summer that are fun: hanging out, barbecuing, and trying to impress girls. Ah, to the good ole days…One of the things that makes the music video memorable is seeing DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith cruising around Philly while sitting on patio furniture. ‘Summertime’ was produced by Chicago-based producers Hula & K. Fingers and won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 1992 Grammy Awards. More than 20 years later, it’s still one of people’s go-to summer jams.
