You Are What You Worship. Old Gods are Fading & New Gods are Rising in ‘American Gods’ (Clip) on Starz

“What were you doing in Chicago?” “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you. I was recruiting still vital god of death into a war against the new gods who very rightly fear him as much as they should fear me, but don’t, yet.” ‘American Gods’ is a Starz channel series based on the best-selling novel by Neil Gaiman, which mixes the concepts of old gods of traditional mythology and new gods that have risen as society has changed.

“So who are you?” “You won’t believe in me if I told you.” Shadow is a man with a past. When Shadow Moon is released from prison, he meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday and a storm begins to brew. Little does Shadow know, this storm will change the course of his entire life. Left adrift by the recent, tragic death of his wife, and suddenly hired as Mr. Wednesday’s bodyguard, Shadow finds himself in the center of a world that he struggles to understand. It’s a world where magic is real, where the Old Gods fear both irrelevance and the growing power of the New Gods, like Technology and Media.

“You’ve gotten yourself mixed up in some really weird sh*t Shadow.” Mr. Wednesday seeks to build a coalition of Old Gods to defend their existence in this new America, and reclaim some of the influence that they’ve lost. As Shadow travels across the country with Mr. Wednesday, he struggles to accept this new reality, and his place in it.

“Seems you have a choice. Either the world is crazy or you are. Come with me.” Shadow comes to learn that Wednesday is, in fact, the god Odin of Norse mythology and that all of the gods that mankind has ever believed in are alive in human form and live among regular people. Shadow is soon thrust into a gathering conflict between the Old gods and the so-called “New gods,” the gods of money and technology who believe there is no longer room on Earth for the old gods.

Old Gods are Fading New Gods are Rising. Created by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, ‘American Gods’ looks fantastic. With a cast that includes: Gillian Anderson, Yetide Badaki, Emily Browning, Rickey Whittle, Dane Cook, Cloris Leachman and Orlando Jones, the series debuted April 30, 2017 on Starz.

Entertainment of interest to me is not just a repeat of what you can find elsewhere, but, is inclusive of stories that are not highly publicized as well as ‘old-school’ celebrity news.

I see the glass half-full and strive to be a light in the darkness.
