“America, they want someone to love, they want someone to hate and the haters always say Tonya tell the truth. There’s no such thing as truth, I mean it’s bullsh*t.” The tabloid incident about Harding, her husband Jeff Gillooly and their flunkies who conspired to injure rival figure skater Nancy Kerrigan is highlighted in ‘I, Tonya.’ The story follows competitive ice skater Tonya Harding as she rises among the ranks at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, as her future in the sport is thrown into doubt.
Growing up Harding battled against a harsh upbringing, a violent husband and mother, and snobby skating judges, all to ensure that her skating talent shined. To this day, the two-time Olympian and two-time Skate America champion stands as the first female skater, and second overall, to complete the feat of a triple axel jump in competition.
Directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Steven Rogers who wrote his screenplay based off interviews with Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly, the biographical sports comedy-drama stars Margot Robbie as figure skater Harding, along with others including Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney, Paul Walter Hauser, Julianne Nicholson, Caitlin Carver, Bojana Novakovic and Bobby Cannavale. ‘I, Tonya’ screened at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and has a theater release date of December 8, 2018.
