“You know what amazes me about you?” “Could be anything I’m a pretty amazing guy.” “You turned the keys to your bar to the guy who used to sleep on your pool table and then you jump in your car you drive me to hell and gone and you don’t even know where we’re going.” In the comedy-drama ‘Last Flag Flying’ thirty years after they served together in Vietnam, a former Navy Corps medic Larry “Doc” Shepherd re-unites with his old buddies, ex-Marine Sal Nealon and Reverend Richard Mueller, to bury his son, a young Marine killed in the Iraq War.
“Ask the question, am I willing to surrender to God? I see we have some visitors amongst us today.” “We were in the service together with your Pastor.” “I haven’t seen these men in decades they represent a dark period in my life.” Former old military buddies, naval petty officers Billy and Mule are reunited with Larry Meadows for a moving final mission. “That went down awfully quick.” “I’m drinking for two now that you got old and boring.”
“Because of my son I came here found you guys. A year ago he joined the core and then two days ago they told me that he’d been killed. He’s going to be buried in Arlington and I was wondering if you guys can come with me?” The comedy-drama is directed by Richard Linklater who co-wrote the screenplay with Darryl Ponicsan, based upon the latter’s 2005 novel of the same name. ‘The Last Flag Flying’ is “sort of” a sequel to Hal Ashby’s The Last Detail, a 1973 drama about two salty Navy veterans (Jack Nicholson, Otis Young) who take a young sailor (Randy Quaid) on a road trip to prison.
“You’re there for your brothers that’s all that really matters.” Starring Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell, Laurence Fishburne and J. Quinton Johnson ‘Last Flying Flag’ will have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 28, 2017, before being released on November 3, 2017, by Lionsgate.
