“All I ever wanted was to be a rapper. I want people to fall in love with my words. I need to be undeniable.” ‘Love Beats Rhymes’ is a musical drama about a struggling aspiring hip-hop rapper Coco (Azealia Banks) who discovers the world of slam poetry.
“Welcome to Poetry 101.” When Coco enrolls in a poetry class, she thinks her rhymes will impress her teacher, Professor Dixon (Jill Scott). “Poetry is about truth and introspection. Write something that scares you.” Instead, she learns to dig deeper and discovers her “true voice.”
“You got mad skills but you’re wasting them.” Dixon challenges Coco to seek real meaning in her lyrics, setting her on a journey of discovery that takes her through rap clubs and poetry slams, leading her to find her true voice — and true love.
“Welcome to the house. Here time stands still.” When You Find Your Voice Nothing Can Stop You. Directed by musician/filmmaker RZA, from a screenplay written by Nicole Jefferson Asher ‘Love Beats Rhymes’ also stars Hana Mae Lee, Method Man, John David Washington, Common, Lorraine Toussaint and Lucien Laviscount.
“You get one shot.” The musical drama is out in Select Theaters, on Digital and On Demand December 1, 2017. It will be available on DVD January 2, 2018.
