“25 Years ago, Michael Jackson completely changed the game by giving an extraordinary performance at the 1993 Super Bowl Halftime Show. Every artist who has performed since owes a debt to Michael for his creativity & “setting of the bar.” Relive the magic.
It will never get better than the King-of-Pop, Jackson’s Super Bowl XXVII performance that changed how we view the halftime performance today. The NFL’s Jim Steeg pitched Jackson’s manager Sandy Gallin, 11 months before Super Bowl XXVII. Steeg recalls Jackson saying, “So you’re telling me that this show is going live to all those places where I’ll never do a concert?” A pause. “I’m in.”
Michael Jackson, wearing a bandolier-draped frock coat on loan, reportedly, from Muammar Gaddafi, was amazing. His performance includes Jam, Billie Jean, Black or White, We are the World and Heal the World. The final moments of that show were the most viewed in the history of television at the time. Of recent halftime performers, in our humble opinion, Bruno Mars was phenomenal and Beyoncé was amazing too.
