“Will you have dinner with me?” “Yes.” “I feel as if I’ve been looking for you a very long time. You look beautiful.” Set in the glamour of 1950’s post-war London, ‘Phantom Thread’ follows renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) who designs fashion for upper-class British citizens. He and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of his label The House of Woodcock.
“I have things I want to do, things I simply can’t do without you.” “May I warn you of something? My brother can feel cursed but loved is stood for him.” Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.
“I don’t like the fabric.” “Maybe one day you’ll change your taste?” “Maybe I like my own taste?” “Just enough to get you into trouble.” “Perhaps I’m looking for trouble?” “Stop!” ‘Phantom Thread’ is writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s eighth movie, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis. Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running.
“There’s an air of quite death in this house.” “You’re not cursed you’re loved by me. Stop playing this game.” “What game? What precisely is the nature of my game?” “All your rules and your clothes all this money and everything is a game!” Reported as Daniel Day-Lewis’s final performance in a film, following four decades in the profession, this will be his first film since Lincoln (2012). In addition, it will be the second collaboration between Paul Thomas Anderson & Daniel Day-Lewis with the first being the highly acclaimed There Will Be Blood (2007), which gained Day-Lewis his second Academy Award for Best Lead Actor and Anderson nominations for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture.
The film was released in theaters January 19, 2018.
