“Anyone of you can tell me what I’m doing here?” “Three nights ago an American was pulled off the street in west Beirut, the next morning we got a communique from a militia group calling itself the militia of Islamic liberation. They have the guy, they want to talk to you to broker the deal. They asked for you specifically.” In 1982, the Paris of the Middle East was burning. The story follows a U.S. diplomat (Jon Hamm) who flees Lebanon in 1972 after a tragic incident at his home. Ten years later, he is called back to war-torn Beirut by CIA operatives (Rosamund Pike) to negotiate for the life of a friend he left behind.
“What is it you want me to do?” “You’re an experienced negotiator, negotiate.” “If I can’t find your brother you’re gonna have to come up with an alternative.” “No alternative.” “He’s given us 6 hours to deliver the brother.” The Americans want to keep their secrets, the Israelis want to raise the stakes, he only wants to save a life.
